The truth about answering this question is that there are many answers, and even with all the information I may impart as a reiki healer, you may in fact only fully understand it for yourself once you have received a reiki healing or attunement.
Therefore, first and foremost, I will provide you with my own interpretation because it is my individualized experience that I know best.
I believe that we all have our own consciousness, purposes and paths. Whoever and wherever you are, in this world and in your journey, please know that I present this information as part of my truth. I fully embrace that there are infinite possibilities, everything is theoretical and these concepts may be incomprehensible, too abstract or even perhaps triggering for some. The very nature of conceptualizing the nonphysical world is challenging so I simply invite you to be open and see what arises for you.
Since my first interactions with reiki as a child through current day as a dedicated practitioner, I understand, feel and believe that reiki is a trifecta of love, light and energy. In other words, it is loving light energy.
We are all familiar with the concept that love heals. Reiki healing is just that, and like other forms of love (romantic, maternal, etc.), it has its own properties. After many years of interacting with reiki as well as delving into the spirit world and expanding my own consciousness, I have come to understand reiki -loving light energy- as synonymous with the term “agape love”.
This kind of loving energy can be found flowing in everything as it is a life force (the word itself in its simplest translation of Japanese literally means “universal life energy”), and quite remarkably, it has its own intelligence or “superconsciousness”. This love is also unconditional which makes its presence completely positive, balanced and utterly harmless.
As a result, when reiki energy is harnessed, channeled and transferred, a healing ensues. It intuitively knows where it is needed so it goes to those places naturally and connects with the receiver’s innate intelligence. Since it interacts with the mental, emotional, physical and spiritual bodies, its effects can be felt on each of these levels. The result of absorbing this concentrated dose of superconscious love is restoration of balance.
This balanced state translates differently in each individual as well as uniquely after every healing session. The reason behind this is that reiki shows up for whomever you are in that present moment and correspondingly whatever is imbalanced in that space and time in your personal journey. In my experience, the most common reactions to a reiki healing are heightened feelings of peace, tranquility, relaxation and rejuvenation. Overall, the positive effects are infinite.
Describing the meaning of reiki would be incomplete without mentioning how it is administered (the action of “giving reiki”). This topic is entirely deserving of a separate discussion, however, I feel it is necessary to include a basic depiction of the current, most common methodology amongst those who practice the tradition of “Usui Reiki” (there are in fact several types of reiki traditions).
As an Usui Reiki practitioner, I act as a conduit such that reiki flows through me and is then transferred into the receiver (which can be a person, place, thing, intention, animal, etc.). It is important to remember that reiki is harnessed outside of my own personal energy, and, therefore, the healing arises from the interaction between reiki and the receiver alone. I am only responsible for “holding space” during the healing and can make zero claim for the actual effects of the healing (thereby making reiki an egoless practice).
The most simplified explanation for the method of how I do this with a receiver who is physically present during a healing session is by either gently laying my hands on their physical body or hovering my hands above them in their etheric body (a.k.a. aura, energy field, astral body, etc.); both hands-on and hovering techniques theoretically have the same efficacy. Reiki is then transmitted through me, “like a hollow piece of bamboo,” as one of my teachers would put it, and into the receiver going where, as aforementioned, it is mentally, emotionally, physically and/or spiritually needed. I place my hands in different, safe areas throughout the session, and I am intuitively guided as to where and for how long my hands are positioned.
As you can see, the method of giving reiki is very simple. However, when you study reiki, there is a plethora of information as well as wisdom to obtain, and it may shift your path in unimaginable, dynamic ways. You will most likely be introduced to a breadth of knowledge on topics such as its history, basic methodology, advanced techniques, energetic anatomy, grounding exercises, professional advice, symbology and terminology.
Furthermore, each teacher (“Reiki Master”) has their own particular style, requirements, course content and class structure; the common denominator amongst Usui trainings/certifications/workshops is that a Reiki Master will give you an “attunement”. This is a sacred ceremony of sorts, and after its completion, the student will be able to provide reiki healing.
Every level of learning Usui Reiki is accompanied by an attunement, and the higher the level, the deeper you dive into the knowledge behind this miraculous world of energy healing. While the actual number of levels varies in different places in the world (i.e. reiki 1, 2 and 3 verses reiki 1, 2, 3 and 4) as well as what is taught in each, the culmination is receiving the Reiki Master attunement. At this point, you will learn how to pass an attunement so that you can continue to spread the tradition of this ancient healing technique and its boundless loving light energy.
If any of this resonates with you such that you feel called to receive a reiki healing or an attunement, I strongly encourage you to follow your intuition and embark on this potentially life-changing journey. When you practice, receive and/or teach reiki, you are essentially bringing peace and balance to a world that is in dire need of it. We are entering a critical point in human history in terms of our sheer existence on planet Earth, and drastic change is necessary. In addition to reiki being loving light energy and a form of energy healing, it may also prove to be an essential component and contributor of how our species evolves and correspondingly survives.
